The Sydney Changemaker’s Long Lunch convened at Gratia cafe in Surry Hills to enhance Preventive Health approaches. Participants were treated to presentations by media strategists, designers and healthcare professionals, that asked guests to re-think the power of language and intention when communicating public health challenges. A keynote address was delivered by Simon Chapman, Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney and well-known tobacco control and clean energy advocate. He shared insights into how to make the public “take notice” and “take action” on public health messaging. Breakout sessions challenged participants to “BrandJam” junk food advertising to create anti-junk adverts in mixed-teams. Participants also engaged in mindful eating and were rewarded with a coffee voucher at Gratia to foster ongoing connection.

Responses from participants in both events have been encouraging. The appetite for increased connection of health advocates at all levels of experience is high and this remains a key area that NCDFREE wishes to foster in the future. We would like to thank Long Lunch partners, Remedy Healthcare, Club Melbourne, Gratia cafe and Aesop for making both days possible.
